WannaCry Ransomware Virus - Everything you need to know about it from What is it? to How to Protect yourself from it?
First things first :-
What is WannaCry
WannaCry, also known as WanaCrypt0r 2.0, WannaCry and WCry, is a form of "ransomware" that locks up the files on computer and encrypts them in a way that user cannot access them anymore.
Sounds Terrifying...
Now, What is a Ransomware
Ransomware is malware for data kidnapping, an exploit in which the attacker encrypts the victim's data and demands payment for the decryption key.
Ransomware spreads through e-mail attachments, infected programs and compromised websites. A ransomware malware program may also be called a cryptovirus, cryptotrojan or cryptoworm.
Attackers may use one of several different approaches to extort money from their victims:
- After a victim discovers he cannot open a file, he receives an email ransom note demanding a relatively small amount of money in exchange for a private key. The attacker warns that if the ransom is not paid by a certain date, the private key will be destroyed and the data will be lost forever.
- The victim is duped into believing he is the subject of an police inquiry. After being informed that unlicensed software or illegal web content has been found on his computer, the victim is given instructions for how to pay an electronic fine.
- The malware surreptitiously encrypts the victim's data but does nothing else. In this approach, the data kidnapper anticipates that the victim will look on the Internet for how to fix the problem and makes money by selling anti-ransomware software on legitimate websites.
And Why it is in Trending
A global cyber attack has been underway since Friday, affecting more than 200,000 organisations in 150 countries. In the UK, the major assault hit 47 NHS trusts, leading to operations being cancelled and patients turned away from A&E.
The "WannaCry" ransomware appears to have used a flaw in Microsoft's software, discovered by the National Security Agency and leaked by hackers, to spread rapidly across networks locking away files.
A security expert managed to stop the attack by triggering a "kill switch" on Saturday but it has continued to wreak havoc.
Ransomware, which demands payment after launching a cyber attack, has become a rising trend among hackers looking for a quick payout.
And Now the current Situation :-
A computer malware that has spread across 150 countries appears to be slowing down, with few reports of fresh attacks globally on Monday.
A computer malware that has spread across 150 countries appears to be slowing down, with few reports of fresh attacks globally on Monday.
A spokesperson for police agency Europol said the situation in Europe "seems stable".
In Asia, where many offices closed before the WannaCry ransomware struck on Friday, the attack has been less severe than expected.
The ransomware takes over users' files, demanding $300 (£230) to restore them.
Only about $50,000 (£39,000) has been paid so far, according to Elliptic Labs which tracks illicit use of the internet currency Bitcoin.
However, the ransomware warning said that the cost would double after three days, so the payments may increase.
It threatens to delete files within seven days if no payment is made.
Computer giant Microsoft said the attack, which has affected hundreds of thousands of computers, should serve as a wake-up call.
Among the organisations targeted worldwide have been Germany's rail network Deutsche Bahn, Spanish telecommunications operator Telefonica, US logistics giant FedEx and Russia's interior ministry.
And Last but not Least :-
#1. Do Not Open Unwanted Emails
While checking emails through your PC, only open those which you are familiar with. Any mail containing malicious links should be abandoned immediately.
#2. Update your Windows Version
Make sure to update your windows XP, 8 version to its latest version because these versions are often loaded with lots of security patches and fixes.
#3. Install Reputed AntiVirus Software
Get licensed version of QuickHeal, Mcfee, Avast or any other trusted antivirus for your pc. If you have already installed one, make sure to update them frequently.
#4. Install AdBlocker
If you are using Google chrome or Mozilla browser, simply go to extensions & install adblocker. They block popups and significantly restricts the entry of unwanted softwares.
#5. Do Not Download EXE Files from Untrusted Sources
Be very careful while installing any exe file in your pc. Double check that file by scanning it through antivirus.
